Harmful Ingredients To Avoid In Toothpaste

Brushing teeth

Toothpaste is an essential part of our daily hygiene routine, but most people pay little attention to the ingredients on the label of their toothpaste.

Regular toothpastes often have harsh and toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment and your health. These toxins can be ingested and absorbed into the bloodstream too.

Here are some ingredients to avoid in toothpaste:

Triclosan

Triclosan is an ingredient that has been banned by the FDA for its use in soaps, but ironically it is still added to toothpastes.

Triclosan is a pesticide that’s known for its antibacterial properties. It’s also said to help fight plaque and gingivitis.

It’s known as a super chemical because of how strong its antibacterial properties are. The chemical structure of triclosan is very similar to Agent Orange, a herbicide used in the Vietnam war.

Health concerns surrounding this particular ingredient include cancer, osteoporosis, endocrine issues, and cardiovascular disease.

Saccharin

Saccharin is a petroleum-based compound that is used as a sugar substitute. It’s made from crude oil and is used in sugar free products like soft drinks.

It’s also used to flavor lip balms and toothpaste. It’s around 350 times sweeter than sugar, which is never a good sign and has been linked to cancer, according to a few clinical studies.

Carrageenan

Carrageenan is a seaweed derivative that’s used to thicken and bind toothpaste. It’s also used in commercial chocolate and dairy products -milk, yogurt, and cream.

Despite this ingredient being used in food products, it’s not particularly safe. It causes inflammation of the intestines and is possibly responsible for ulceration and colon cancer.

Sodium lauryl sulfate & laureth sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are common ingredients in shampoos and toothpastes. They are surfactants that are known for their foaming properties.

Typically, we think that a shampoo works because of its ability to lather up, when in reality, the foam doesn’t clean your hair. Likewise, bundles of foam doesn’t equate to the cleaning action of toothpaste. There are studies that have shown this ingredient to increase the recurrence of mouth ulcers.

Choose toothpaste tablets made by the Naked Company, instead. Their Toothy Tabs are eco-friendly and great for your teeth. They’re free of toxic ingredients like SLS, triclosan, and saccharin.

The toothpaste tablets are backed by dentists as well. They are a great gluten free and vegan toothpaste option too. Visit their website to buy toothpaste tablets.

If you’re allergic to fluoride, they have a fluoride-free option too. While you’re on their website, switch over to bamboo toothbrushes too and help save the environment from plastic waste.
